The DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) ingredient used is naturally derived from sugar. The molecules in sugar actually will turn brown in time, hence it delivers that naturally tanning effect. Due to its natural source, it is acceptable as a safe and non-toxic ingredient upon the skin.
